Kaino-what?
Kainotomia. It’s a Greek word meaning innovation. For the students in Richmond County Schools it’s representative of technology-centered lessons they’re learning in a summer class devised by 2013 White House Champions of Change Award winner Jeff Epps.
Together with his teaching partner, Chad Osborne, Jeff led a devoted group of 5th to 12th graders in this year’s Summer of Kainotomia. For the past 7 years, the Summer of Kainotomia workshop has exposed students to emerging technologies like 3D design and 3D printing and not only increased students’ academic performance, but prepared them to compete in a global economy.
This year’s edition featured lessons on 3D technology in healthcare, and had students act as medical designers as they created anatomical models using Cubify Sculpt digital sculpting software. Harnessing the digital thread, these burgeoning designers then 3D printed their designs on the CubePro 3D printer—everything from full heart models to brain models.
