Champaign, I.L., September 1, 1998 - Geomagic, Inc., a privately held supplier of 3D physical modeling technology founded in Champaign, Illinois, today announced the appointment of Jon Fjeld, 46, to the position of president and chief executive officer. Fjeld, highly regarded in technology circles for his vision and leadership, will be responsible for managing all aspects of the business operation. Focusing on building a solid and fast-growing software company, Fjeld will run the company from its soon-to-be-opened worldwide headquarters at Research Triangle Park in North Carolina.

Prior to this appointment, Fjeld spent two years at NetEdge Systems, Inc., and was most recently CEO. He successfully managed the sale of the company to a strategic buyer. He had previously served as the company's vice president of marketing. Prior to joining NetEdge, Fjeld had extensive executive management experience during a 12-year career at IBM, serving in strategic marketing and general management capacities. He managed organizations of up to 400 people. He created a business unit and built it from zero to $100 million in annual revenue.

Geomagic's co-founder, Herbert Edelsbrunner, is a pioneer and a leading expert in the fields of algorithms, computational geometry, and combinatorial topology. Currently a professor at University of Illinois, Edelsbrunner is the only computer scientist to have been awarded the prestigious NSF Waterman Award (1991). Edelsbrunner has accepted a position as professor in the Computer Science Department at Duke University starting September 1999.

Fjeld holds a PhD and MA in philosophy from the University of Toronto, an MBA from Duke University, an MS in computer science from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), and a BA in mathematics and philosophy from Bishop's University. Fjeld served as assistant professor at Duke University from 1977 to 1982.
