RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., July 5, 2007- Geomagic has released a 64-bit edition of Geomagic Studio 9 digital reconstruction software that can process data sets containing more than 200 million points or polygons.

Geomagic Studio automatically creates accurate models from scan data of physical parts, making it ideal for applications such as mass production of customized devices, build-to-order manufacturing, engineering analysis, visualization, and digital asset archiving for an automatic recreation of legacy parts.

Geomagic Studio 9 (64-bit edition) takes advantage of the expanded memory capacity of 64-bit computer systems to process huge datasets generated by the newest generation of non-contact 3D scanners. Larger, denser datasets are being used more frequently in automotive, aerospace and other industries for design, analysis, assembly and inspection. A scan of an automotive exterior, for example, is typically in the range of 30 to 100 million points.

“The latest edition of Geomagic Studio fulfills the industry’s need for processing capacity while continuing to deliver Geomagic's patented automation, flexibility, and simplicity,“ says Peter Scott, Geomagic's vice president of engineering.

Highly detailed models from huge scan files, such as this 65-million-polygon model of the Liberty Bell, can be created using the new Geomagic Studio 9 (64-bit edition).

Benchmark testing has shown Geomagic Studio 9 (64-bit edition) capable of loading and processing models containing more than 200 million polygons on a system with 8 GB of RAM. The latest version of Geomagic Studio has proven to reduce processing time by as much as 90 percent.

“Geomagic Studio 9 (64-bit edition) easily processes datasets from scanners that create massive point clouds,“ says Michael Raphael, president of Direct Dimensions, a leading digital shape sampling, and processing (DSSP) service bureau. “This is a big step forward, and will expand our use of Geomagic software to projects requiring datasets of a size that could barely be imagined only five years ago.“

The 64-bit capabilities in the latest version of Geomagic Studio 9 improve performance at every phase of the software's workflow, including:

  • processing of ordered or unordered data, multiple-scan point clouds or a single point cloud from any 3D scanner;
  • automated conversion of point clouds into polygons to create watertight digital models for digital manufacturing, rapid prototyping and visualization; and
  • automated translation of complex polygon models into accurate, high-quality NURBS surfaces for hybrid modeling and CAD/CAM/CAE applications.

The latest version of Geomagic Studio also includes improved NURBS surface generation and new features such as transparency for polygon models and advanced lighting properties. Geomagic Studio is offered in English, Chinese, Japanese, German, French, Spanish and Italian from Geomagic and its distributors worldwide.
