IDEA International, Inc. along with several leading dental schools is developing an innovative education and training method. This system enhances realism through the sense of touch. Graphics have been created that transform the "dentoform" into a realistic system that has the tactile and force feedback that a dentist would normally receive when using a dental drill (handpiece). The haptic technology allows the user to feel dental enamel, dentin, and pulp tissue compliance properties to simulate realism. The platform for providing haptic feedback is a PHANTOM® haptic device, produced by SensAble Technologies, Inc.®. With feedback from the PHANTOM device, the user can create all of the haptic sensations experienced during dental procedures. The units will be placed at all dental schools and selected general practitioners. Commercial dental companies will be able to sponsor modules that expose users to new techniques, methods and products through haptic simulation.
