Overview
3D Systems has been instrumental in establishing this industry segment with over 25 years of anatomical modeling experience. This offering focuses on taking medical images from digital medical imaging data to a 3D physical representation of any anatomy in a variety of materials.
Anatomical Modeling Service
Utilizing the 3D Systems anatomical modeling service, the surgeon provides a CT or MR scan of their patient and our team of engineers will process the data, design the model and 3D print it using our state of the art fleet of 3D printers. The model is then shipped to the surgeon for use in pre-surgical planning, pre-surgical rehearsal, educational purposes and can even be used in a sterile environment depending on the material.
How It Works
Material Options
SLA (Stereolithography)
Sterilizable
SLA models are 3D Systems’ premier offering for patient-specific anatomical models. SLA models are offered in opaque white and translucent with a unique ability for selective coloration whereby the model can contain a deep red coloration to highlight vital structures such as tumors, vascular structures or tooth roots. SLA models can be sterilized, if needed, for reference in the sterile field during the surgical procedure. These highly accurate models of any anatomy begin with expert image processing of the CT/CBCT input data. Following the medical imaging step, which reconstructs the two-dimensional images into three-dimensional files, these files are sent to our fleet of state-of-the-art stereolithography additive manufacturing machines. These machines typically produce single or multiple models over many hours, in a layered, additive fashion. Models are made in a biocompatible resin, which is UV-cured layer by layer by an ultraviolet laser. Once complete, the models are sent through our intensive quality control system and readied for shipment to the surgeon. Typical turnaround can be from one to two weeks with faster turnaround possible for urgent needs.
